School of Art

The mission of the School of Art is to provide a rigorous, student-centered education that emphasizes risk-taking and exploration. We graduate diverse artists and professionals who use their expertise with insight, enriching culture and the world. The School of Art's innovative, top-ranked, and internationally recognized undergraduate programs in Art and Design Education, the Associate Degree Programs, Digital Arts and Animation, Film/Video, Fine Arts, and Photography are a destination for talented students. These programs are enhanced by studies in the liberal arts and sciences and create dynamic contexts for technical training in conjunction with intellectual and creative inquiry. Students join a community of working artists, including an outstanding faculty that supports experimentation, growth, and developing practice. Additionally, living and studying in New York City affords students unparalleled access to resources and opportunities.

The School of Art is dedicated to the transformative power of creativity, upholding professional standards, and developing creative leadership in a world that requires it. Two parallel objectives guide every department in the School of Art. One is the emphasis on students acquiring high-level skills, methodologies, and vocabulary required for success as creative professionals. The second objective—intertwined with the first—is to balance that professional proficiency with a highly developed critical judgment based on historical perspectives so that students become effective, responsible, and creative problem solvers.
