Program Description
The Teaching Creative Writing Minor is a cross-disciplinary 16- credit minor for students from across the Institute. In addition to the required teaching courses, students will choose from elective courses in the social sciences and in the study of children's and young adult literature that will provide key contextual understanding of the link between education, communities, and urban change. Students will have the opportunity to explore the unique affordances ofthe creativewriting classroom as it applies to community building, intergenerational exchange, and democratic practice. Students will explore working with a range of students and a variety of institutional contexts, and begin to build an understanding of whether, and how, they would like to make teaching creative writing part oftheir professional practice. Students will also gain an appreciation for the many different ways teaching can look, and how teaching might enhance their own lives as writers, and community members. The TeachingWriting Minor is for students interested in teaching creativewriting courses while participating in and contributing to the rich educational, social and cultural life of New York City.
